Important update regarding the Revised Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – September 2021

The Department for Education has revised the statutory framework that sets the standards for all care and learning for children up to the age of five, which has come into effect from September 2021. The team have undertaken training for this reform in order to ensure that everyone is confident to implement the revised framework.

Why have these changes been made?
  • These changes have been made in particular to:
    Improve early language and literacy.
  • Reduce any unnecessary paperwork. This will allow staff members to spend more time with their children, extending their play as it happens.

This positive change allows staff to focus less on paperwork and evidence, and more on the enjoyment of spending time with their key children.

What does this mean for my child?

At Nemo’s we recognise that parents love to see detail on what their child has been doing during their time at nursery, therefore we will be introducing:

  • A ‘progress catch-up’ – this will provide an opportunity for the key worker and parent/carer to discuss how their child is developing during their time at nursery, their interests, achievements, any challenges and to answer any questions you may have. These will take place every 6 months.
  • Focus week observations – Every month your child’s key worker will observe them whilst they play. This will enable key workers to seek out opportunities to further support their play and learning, and these observations will be on our Parent Portal. These will also give the opportunity for the key worker to identify, reflect and support their key children with next steps.

You will continue to see daily photos and updates, including what they have eaten and how long they have slept.

In addition, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole early years are supporting settings in the borough to use the Wellcomm speech and language toolkit. This will help the early identification of any speech and language difficulty or delay which will help enable the team to work in partnership with our parents to ensure the best outcomes for your child.

If you have any questions regarding the changes to the EYFS or Wellcomm and how it reflects in our practice, please do not hesitate to talk to the team.
